An ideal oval, upright shade tree with large foliage. Produces round nuts in the fall, in pairs or singly, enclosed in a green husk. The nuts have large tough outer shells but are totally worth breaking open for the delicious and nutritious walnuts inside. The nut husks can stain your hands black/brown and are best picked up and deshelled right away to avoid mold. This tree is allelopathic meaning that it inhibits the growth of other plants within a certain area of where it is standing.
